BANGI, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- A team from Universiti Malaya (UM) emerged champion in the Robogamez 2009 final, after sweeping aside stiff competition provided by three other teams in the open category.
UM, which was represented by 10 undergraduates, beat Inology Squad from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (international campus), JMTI B from the Japan-Malaysia Technical Institute and UPM A from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
The champion won cash of US$2,000, a trophy and participation certificate, besides being able to represent Malaysia at the Featherweight Championship in the United Kingdom next year.
UM team manager Gerald Goh said they took almost three weeks to build the robot based on the Robogamez 2009 theme, "Rising of the Silent Tower: Resist or Surrender" on a RM1,000 budget.
Under the theme, the competition participants were required to build a robot that could fight in a war.
Goh said the ability of their robot to function even when overturned could have contributed to their winning the competition.
"From our observation in past competitions, the weapon is not the most important element but the ability to defend is also vital, and that had been our main strategy in our robotic creation.
"Our robot does not have a weapon compared to the other robots, but is defence-capable in any attack, which proved to be successful for us," he said, adding that the UM team comprised second-year students from its Engineering Faculty.
The UPM A team was the runner-up, JMTI B team was third and Inology Squad from UTM, fourth, in the open category.
The Keliki team from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Lanang, Banting, Selangor was top winner in the primary school category, beating Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil West Country Timur in Kajang in second place, SK Seafield in Subang Jaya in third, and Nurul Izzah Orphanage and Welfare Home in Bangi in fourth.
In the secondary school category, the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) Kota Putra, Terengganu was the champion and MRSM Taiping, Perak the runner-up, while the third place was won by Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Serdang, Selangor and MRSM Alor Gajah, Melaka.
The Robogamez 2009 final was officiated by Higher Education Deputy Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung.
